Bij het gebruik van een zonneboiler gaat het koude water niet meer rechtstreeks de ketel in, maar het boilervat. Als de collector 10ºC meer meet dan het water onderin de boiler start het systeem op het door de zon verwarmde water. Door uw tapwater te verwarmen met een zonneboiler, kunt u hierop tot zo'n 55% besparen op het gas dat anders nodig was geweest. Om uw gehele woning te verwarmen met een zonneboiler is niet verstandig, het warme water zal te snel verloren zal gaan en u zal er dus niets op besparen. Indien u de woning verwarmt door middel van vloerverwarming is een zonneboiler wel prima te gebruiken. De energieopbrengst van een zonneboiler wordt uitgedrukt in GigaJoule (GJ). Een GigaJoule is gelijk aan een miljard Joules, wat overeenkomt met de warmte die vrijkomt bij de verbranding van 31 m³ aardgas, genoeg voor een gemiddeld huishouden om vijf maanden op te koken. Er zijn zonneboilers met een energieopbrengst van meer dan 3 GJ. Er zijn zonneboilers met een energieopbrengst van meer dan 3,5 GJ, slechts met een collector.
